From the time that I had got that phone call from Kush about April I was totally disturbed. All that kept playing in my head was the last argument we had got into about her stopping. How she made it seem like just because she didn’t have a man in her life the way I had Kush in mine, that it was okay to go out and rob people. The amount of money April took, or drugs she stole and collected money for; there was no reason why she should still be doing that shit. I can only imagine now what Kush had to tell me. My sleep was restless that night and when I woke up the next morning I called him.

“When are you going to be home?” I asked as soon as he answered, barely giving him a chance to say hello.

“I’ll be home by 3:00pm today babe, why what’s up?”

“Nothing, I just want to see you.”

He knew better than that though. “I know what your problem is,” he said. “We’ll talk when I get home.”

“Okay, baby,” I said and hung up the phone.

I took a shower and got dressed and headed to the nail salon and then to the grocery store so I could make sure Kush’s dinner was ready when he got there. I had just finished cooking his favorite dinner of oxtail, rice and peas, plantain with salad on the side when I saw Kush’s BMW pull into the driveway. I had also bought a cheesecake for desert and a bottle of Spamanti Bambino; cheap bottle but the shit tasted good and that’s all I cared about.

Kush walked in with a Michael Kors mini bag. I knew I was going to get something because he always bought me gifts when he went out of town. It didn’t matter where, as long he was “OT” he came back with a gift. This time it was a pink and gold diamond encrusted watch inside the bag. I put it on immediately after I hugged him and placed a big kiss on his lips, and then I dished out food for the both of us and then set our plates on the table. Kush went to go wash his hands and strip down to his ball shorts and wife beater before coming back to the table. I wasted no time getting to the point when Kush sat down. I wasn’t going to pretend that my mind wasn’t going a million miles a minute just because he just came off the road.

“So what’s up babe?” I asked. “What did April do now?

“Damn babe, you didn’t even give me a chance to get settled in before you start hitting me with questions.” Kush said looking a little frustrated.

“I’m sorry baby, I know you just came in but if this was your best friend you wouldn’t wait either.”

Kush looked in my eyes without saying anything for a while knowing damn well that I was right.
